The Wonder of Gospel or The Best News Ever by Pastor Fred Garnes
What is the best news you can ever imagine?
In our quest for good news we read through newspapers, search the internet, listen to talk radio, watch TV, live stream on note pads, and tweet. And we’ve hardly begun our search.
Our quest is for news that answers life’s issues, frustrations, and inequities. But instead we get details of crimes, natural disasters, child abuses and other unmentionable horrors at the local, national, and global levels. The width, breadth, and depth of these equal opportunity offences span from the marginalized and helpless to the rich and powerful. Where are the answers to the hard questions when life is at its ugliest? What are the explanations to “why did God let this happen?” or to “how could someone do such a horrible thing?”
Our search for good news-answers that bring resolution-is like an itch that can’t be stopped no matter what treatment or remedy we try. In our pursuit for answers, albeit in all the wrong places, what we find is opinion and incomplete information masquerading as news.
Every journalist knows that news isn’t news unless you get it.
To get the news you’ve got to understand the story.
The real story:
For a very short interval of time when God created the world, perfect people walked through a perfect world in perfect union and harmony with God. There were no environmental concerns and there was perfect balance in the created order. Perfect weather meant no earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, or storms. Perfect life meant no food shortages, no dreaded diseases, no contaminated water, and that life was as God meant it to be. Man and woman, Adam and Eve lived in perfect harmony with God and with each other. No hidden agendas, power struggles, fear, guilt, shame, or vengeance. Instead there was peace, understanding, open communication, and love. No depression, addiction, psychosis, anxiety, no lust, no temptation. The people enjoyed perfect communication and communion with God their Creator. They were God’s image bearers who were given the responsibility, privilege, to govern what he had made. Life could not be better. All was right. Life was better than anything imaginable.
But this paradise was short lived. In one rebellious act man and woman exchanged all of this for a lie. They did what God had warned and told them not to do (sound familiar?) and listened to and obeyed the voice of someone else. All of the created order was permanently ruined.
Fear, guilt, shame became the norm for God’s image bearers. People who once lived in perfect harmony with one another now fought one another, deceived one another and sought to dominate one another by any means available. The perfect world now groans under the curse of the Fall. Sin had changed every thought, desire, word and deed.
Now for the best news:
In John 3:16 of the Bibles’ New Testament
“For God loved the world in this way: He gave His One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.
God’s love is to be admired not because the world is so big and includes so many people, but because the world is so bad. The love of God is all inclusive. God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us! History is His delay in judgment which we deserve as traitors to the Sovereign of the Universe. History is proof of His delayed judgment. Each day gives witness to his display of divine restraint. History is evidence of God’s love, mercy, kindness, and patience.
This news is better, and it is better than good news. It is the best news ever. It is the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
My prayer is you will believe it, embrace it, and live in the reality of its power now and for eternity
